Description

Cryptocoryne ferruginea Narrow is a rare and distinctive aquatic plant endemic to the island of Borneo, with natural populations documented across the rivers, streams, and shaded riverbanks of Sarawak, Malaysia, and the Kalimantan provinces of Indonesia. This narrow-leaf form of C. ferruginea stands out within the species for its slender, elongated foliage that shifts between rich shades of green and warm russet-brown depending on light intensity and nutrient availability.
In its natural habitat, C. ferruginea grows along shaded riverbanks and stream margins, often anchoring itself to tree roots in soft, acidic blackwater conditions. It tends to grow in small clusters beneath the forest canopy, where filtered light, high humidity, and leaf litter create the stable, nutrient-rich environment it prefers. The narrow form shares these same habitat preferences, making soft to moderately soft water the ideal starting point for aquarium cultivation.
