Description

Nervilia aragoana — The Tall Shield Orchid
Among the most intriguing and lesser-known terrestrial orchids in the world, Nervilia aragoana — commonly called the Tall Shield Orchid — is a plant that quietly captivates all who encounter it. Native to the lush tropical forests of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the northern regions of Australia, this small but remarkable orchid has earned a dedicated following among botanists, collectors, and orchid enthusiasts alike.
What makes Nervilia aragoana truly fascinating is its unusual life cycle. Unlike most flowering plants, it blooms before its leaf even appears — sending up a slender erect stem bearing a graceful raceme of pale greenish-yellow flowers, each adorned with a delicate cream-white lip, often traced with hairy purple or green veins. Only after flowering does its single, bold, heart-shaped leaf emerge from the ground, plicate and broad, sometimes marked with deep maroon on its upper surface — a stunning structural leaf that becomes the plant’s crowning feature for the rest of the season.
