Pterisanthes sp. Papua is an exceptionally rare tropical liana collected from the rainforests of Papua, Indonesia. Belonging to the Vitaceae family — the same family as grapevines — this species has not yet been formally described by science, giving it an air of botanical mystery that sets it apart from anything in the mainstream plant market.
Foliage & Growth Habit
The leaves of Pterisanthes sp. Papua are elongated and can vary between individuals, sometimes displaying subtle lobes or a smooth, narrow blade. Under good conditions, the foliage deepens to rich, lustrous green tones. New growth emerges soft and vibrant before hardening into woody, mature vines. As a climbing liana, it produces long vining stems that readily grip a support structure or trail elegantly if left unsupported. Mature plants can reach up to 3 meters in height with a spread of around 75 cm.
Botanical Background
This plant belongs to the genus Pterisanthes, a group of tropical climbing vines related to Cissus and Vitis. The genus was first described by botanist Carl Ludwig Blume in 1825, with its name derived from the Greek pteris (fern) and anthos(flower) — a nod to the frond-like quality of some species’ foliage. Pterisanthes sp. Papua sits outside the usual aroid collector circuit, making it a genuinely distinctive addition to any serious plant collection.
Care Requirements
| Light | Bright indirect light, 10,000–20,000 lux |
| Watering | Water when top 20–35% of substrate is dry |
| Humidity | 60–80%+ |
| Temperature | Ideal 20–28 °C; avoid below 18 °C |
| Substrate | Airy, moisture-retentive mix (bark, perlite, coco coir) |
| Support | Moss pole or trellis recommended |
| Toxicity | Unknown — keep away from pets and children |
Growing Tips
Provide a vertical climbing support from the start to encourage upright, structured growth. Maintain high humidity and stable warmth above 18 °C year-round. Fertilize monthly at half strength during the growing season. This is not a fast-food plant — it rewards patience and consistent conditions with impressive, architectural growth.
A True Collector’s Piece
Because Pterisanthes sp. Papua remains scientifically unresolved, every plant you grow contributes to the broader understanding of this mysterious species. Rare in cultivation, rarer still in the wild due to habitat loss in its native Papua, this is a plant for growers who appreciate the unusual, the taxonomically intriguing, and the genuinely hard-to-find.
