Deep within the ancient forests of Kalimantan, a tiny plant catches the dim filtered light and transforms it into something otherworldly — a shimmer of violet and blue that seems to glow from within. This is Sarcopyramis Purple, one of Borneo’s most quietly spectacular endemic treasures.
What is Sarcopyramis Purple?
Sarcopyramis Purple belongs to the genus Sarcopyramis, a group of flowering plants in the family Melastomataceae native to tropical and subtropical Asia. This particular variety is endemic to the island of Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia — meaning it exists nowhere else on Earth in its wild form.
The plant is compact and ground-hugging, typically no larger than a thumb. Its true magic lies in its foliage: dark, velvety leaves that, under low-light conditions, shimmer with an iridescent blue-purple sheen — a phenomenon caused by specialized nano-structures in the leaf cells that scatter light in much the same way a butterfly’s wing does.
Did you know
The less light Sarcopyramis receives, the more intensely blue its iridescence becomes. This is an evolutionary adaptation — the nano-structures help the plant harvest light more efficiently on the deeply shaded forest floor.
Scientific classification

Care guide
Despite its exotic appearance, Sarcopyramis Purple rewards attentive growers. The key is replicating its native habitat: a warm, deeply humid, low-light environment. Terrariums and enclosed glass vessels are ideal, as they maintain the consistent moisture the plant craves.
Light
Low to moderate indirect light. Direct sun will scorch leaves.
Humidity
High — ideally 80%+. Closed terrarium works best.
Temperature
18–27 °C (65–80 °F). Warm tropical conditions year-round.
Soil
Airy, well-draining mix. Sphagnum moss or epiphytic blend.
Watering
Water when the top 2 cm of soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging.
Fertilising
Dilute liquid feed at ¼ strength every 2 weeks in growing season.
Local advantage — Balikpapan & East Kalimantan
You live in this plant’s native homeland. The warm, humid climate of East Kalimantan is essentially ideal growing conditions without any special equipment — a shaded porch or a north-facing windowsill can be enough to keep Sarcopyramis Purple thriving.
Common problems & solutions
Browning or yellowing leaves
Usually caused by too much direct light or inconsistent watering. Move to a shadier spot and check that the soil isn’t drying out completely between waterings.
Slow or stunted growth
Low humidity is the most common culprit. Increase moisture with regular misting, a pebble-and-water tray, or by moving the plant into a terrarium.
Root rot
A sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings and ensure your pot has adequate drainage holes.
Loss of iridescent sheen
Paradoxically, too much light can suppress the blue shimmer. Move the plant to a darker position — the iridescence intensifies in lower light.
Where to find it
Sarcopyramis Purple has become a sought-after rarity in the global rare-plant community. Several specialist nurseries based in Indonesia — including operations in Kalimantan — offer the plant with international shipping, typically alongside a phytosanitary certificate required for export. Prices reflect its rarity, often ranging from $30–$60 USD per plant. For buyers within Indonesia, local pricing and direct pickup options are frequently available.
