Scindapsus Care: A Simple Guide for Healthy Vines
Good scindapsus care starts with understanding how these plants live in nature. Scindapsus are climbing aroids in the Araceae family. They grow across Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Queensland and a few western Pacific islands, and some species grow in Borneo. In the wild, they root along stems and climb trees. At home, you can give them the same simple setup.

Know Your Scindapsus
Many people call a golden pothos a scindapsus, but botanists now place it in the genus Epipremnum. True Scindapsus have thick, leathery leaves, and many show silver or pale markings. We grow several kinds at Borneo Aquatic, such as Treubii Dark, Rupestris, Rubicon and Mayari. Each has its own leaf shape and color, but they share the same basic needs.
Light for Scindapsus Care
Bright, indirect light suits most scindapsus. Strong direct sun can scorch the leaves, while very dim spots slow growth and can fade the markings. Place your plant near a bright window, and turn the pot now and then so all sides get light.
Watering and Soil
Overwatering causes more problems than underwatering. Let the top layer of the mix dry before you water again, and always use a pot with drainage holes. Choose an airy, well-draining mix with bark or perlite so the roots can breathe. If the leaves curl, check the roots and the mix before you change anything else.
Support and Growth
Scindapsus love to climb. A moss pole or a sturdy stake gives the stems something to grip, and climbing plants often grow larger leaves. You can also let them trail from a hanging pot. Trim long stems to keep the plant full, and root the cuttings in water or moist mix.
Humidity, Pests and Safety
Average household humidity works for most scindapsus, though extra humidity helps new leaves open cleanly. Wipe the leaves occasionally and check for pests such as mealybugs. Like other aroids, scindapsus can irritate mouths if chewed, so keep them away from pets and small children.
